Joern Meissner : Research

My main research focus is on supply chain management, operations strategy and revenue management, but I am generally interested in all problems where mathematical optimization techniques are used to improve business decisions.

My research in the area of Supply Chain Management (SCM) can be considered classical inventory theory, e.g. calculation of optimal lot sizes for situations with multiple products and a common capacity limit. I believe that this area will gain even more importance in the future, as more data about customer and demand patterns becomes available due to better IT-Systems. In a wider context, this area of research, and all those concerned with queuing models, is known as operations strategy.

In comparison to the classical problems of SCM, the research field of Dynamic Pricing and Revenue Management is relatively young - it originated in the context of the airline industry in the late 1970's, and has since been successfully introduced in a variety of other areas such as hotels and car rentals. Even fashion retail stores (GAP, H&M) are now using these methods to determine optimal discount plans for products that need to be cleared from shelves as a new collection arrives. In the future, again due to continuously improving Information technology, these areas of study will gain more and more importance.
